Freelance day rate NZ
A day rate is your hourly floor × the hours you treat as one billable day — expressed in NZD, with clear notes on GST and tax set-asides so you don’t spend money that isn’t yours to keep.

In New Zealand freelancing and contracting, a day rate often assumes roughly 7–8 hours of focused work, sometimes with a half-day option. Always define it in writing:
- Start/end expectations (e.g. 9–5 with a lunch break, or 7.5 productive hours).
- Whether travel, meetings, and admin count.
- Overtime or after-hours rules (extra half-day? hourly top-up?).
Illustrative NZD examples (not market guarantees)
These are worked examples to show maths — not “average NZ rates” and not a promise of what you should charge. Your niche, seniority, and costs drive the number.
| Scenario | Hourly floor | Day (×7.5h) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early solo, low overhead | NZ$55 | NZ$412 | Check if this covers tax set-aside |
| Established specialist | NZ$95 | NZ$712 | May quote project fees instead |
| Senior / scarce skill | NZ$140 | NZ$1,050 | Often fixed-fee for clarity |

How to derive a day rate from costs
- Annual revenue needed (living costs + business costs + buffer).
- ÷ billable days per year (workable days minus holidays, sick leave, sales time).
- Or: hourly rate × hours-per-day definition.

GST and tax set-aside reminders (NZ)
Practical habits many NZ freelancers use — reminders only, not advice:
- GST: If you are (or must become) GST-registered, decide whether quoted day rates are +GST or GST-inclusive, and say so on every quote and invoice.
- Set-aside: Park a percentage of every payment for income tax / provisional tax so a future IRD bill doesn’t wipe cashflow.
- Expenses: Keep receipts for legitimate business costs; your accountant can advise what applies to you.
- Thresholds change: Confirm current GST registration rules on official IRD sources.
When to prefer project pricing instead
Day rates work well for workshops, discovery weeks, and on-site blocks. For defined deliverables, fixed project fees often communicate value better. Compare in hourly vs project pricing.

Half-days and multi-day blocks
Half-days are often slightly more than 50% of a day rate because context-switching still costs a morning. Multi-day blocks can include a modest efficiency discount if the client books consecutive days and pays a deposit — only if your calendar and cashflow benefit.
Contracting vs freelancing labels
Some NZ organisations prefer “contractor day rate” language. The economics are the same: define the day, the rate, expenses, and IRD-relevant obligations with professional help. Don’t rely on blog posts for employment status questions.
